Please join us on Thursday, September 12, 2019 for a viewing of a film on the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City. Colorado’s Canon City and Florence may be best known for Prison Valley, where inmates outnumber residents. But it all started with a tiny territorial prison without a wall, so that inmates could labor in the nearby fields. There is a fascinating story about Colorado’s first prison, its inmates such as Alferd Packer and 11 year murderer Anton Woode, its wardens, its rebellions and riots that most don’t know. Cindy Malone, archivist for Rocky Mountain PBS’ Colorado Experience will present the 1/2 hour documentary that will bring Colorado’s sordid past to life. Refreshments will be served at 6:45pm with the presentation beginning at 7:00pm at the Philip S. Miller Library 100 S. Wilcox St. Castle Rock, CO 80104.
